Christmas revision: how much maths is right?

Here are the actual numbers, so nobody has to read to the end for them: a Year 13 with summer exams should do forty-five minutes to an hour of maths on most days of the Christmas break, with four or five full days completely off; a Year 12 needs half that; and a GCSE student sits between the two depending on how the mocks went. The interesting question isn't the total — it's why that little, why it must be structured to survive Christmas, and why the rest days are load-bearing rather than a concession. Having watched many Decembers' worth of students return in January either sharp or exhausted, here's the honest version.
What the holiday is actually for
The Christmas break has one mathematical job and one human one, and both are real. The mathematical job is maintenance: fluency in this subject decays on a timescale of weeks, and a fully idle fortnight means January starts with a rusty gear-grinding week that nobody can afford in Year 13. The human job is recovery: the autumn term is the longest and hardest of the year, most students arrive at it genuinely depleted, and the spring term — the one where grades are actually made — needs them restored. The right plan serves both jobs at once. The two classic failures each serve only one: the martyr plan (three hours daily, guilt as fuel) sacrifices recovery and reliably collapses by the 27th anyway; the total-shutdown plan protects recovery and hands January a week of avoidable rust. Forty-five structured minutes threads the needle — enough contact to hold fluency, small enough to leave the day intact.
What the minutes should contain
Not notes, and not new content — retrieval. The ideal Christmas session is a short set of mixed questions done cold, marked immediately: past-paper questions by topic, a review exercise, or — for anyone with January mocks — sections of real papers under loose time. Mixed matters more than usual here, because the skill that decays fastest isn't any single topic; it's the recognition skill of deciding what a question wants when nothing announces it. For students coming off December mocks, the error log from those papers is the perfect Christmas syllabus: work the greatest hits, one leak per session — I've written about that whole machinery separately. And a genuinely useful trick for the season: do the maths first, in the morning, before the day fills up. A session that hasn't happened by lunchtime doesn't happen; the fixture list of Christmas always wins the afternoon.
The rest days are part of the plan
This needs saying explicitly because ambitious families treat it as decoration: the four or five full days off are prescribed, not permitted. Christmas Eve through Boxing Day should be maths-free as a matter of policy, plus New Year's Eve and a day of choice — written into the plan in advance, so they're kept deliberately rather than seized guiltily. Two reasons beyond kindness. Practically, a plan with honest rest days survives contact with an actual family Christmas; a plan without them fails by mid-week and takes the student's sense of control down with it — and the wreckage of an abandoned plan does more damage than the plan ever did good. And psychologically, students who rest properly hold a different relationship with the subject in spring: the ones who grind through Christmas on guilt begin the crucial term already borrowing against themselves. Burnout in February is far more expensive than five days of turkey and films in December. I have seen both purchases made, many times.
Adjusting for the situation
The baseline flexes honestly in both directions. Upwards: a Year 13 whose December mock was a genuine warning — structural gaps, not just rust — can run to ninety minutes on working days, provided the content is targeted repair rather than anxious volume, and provided the rest days hold. January mocks in the first week back also justify the higher end, tilted towards timed papers. Downwards: a Year 12 with no January exams is honestly fine on twenty to thirty minutes of algebra maintenance every other day — the course is young, and the recovery job outweighs the maintenance one. What doesn't flex is the shape: short, frequent, retrieval-based, mornings, with real days off. The families who fight me on this always want to trade the shape for more volume, and the trade is always bad. Volume is the cheapest-looking, lowest-value currency in revision.
For parents: what support actually looks like
Three things, none of them supervision. Protect the morning slot — the single most useful contribution available, and it's calendar management, not maths. Honour the rest days as enthusiastically as the work days; a parent who radiates quiet disappointment on Boxing Day is undoing the plan's best feature. And watch for the one warning sign worth acting on: the student who cannot stop — for whom every day off produces visible anxiety — because that's not diligence, it's the fear stage of the subject, and it deserves a conversation rather than congratulation. The goal of the whole fortnight is a student who walks into January current on their maths and genuinely restored. Both halves are the plan. Neither is negotiable, and the spring term will collect on whichever one gets skipped.
If the December evidence says the holiday needs to be more than maintenance — real gaps, a mock that read as a warning — a small number of targeted sessions over the break does disproportionate good, precisely because nothing else is competing with it.
