Struggling to find an A-Level Further Maths tutor? I understand.

Since the 2017 syllabus reform, exam boards are no longer required to teach identical content in Further Maths. Unlike single maths, where the core topics are standardised, Further Maths spans a much broader and more variable range — matrix algebra, complex numbers, differential equations, hyperbolic functions, polar coordinates, and more, depending on the board.

Combine that breadth with a much smaller market, and you end up with a subject that most tutors simply don't offer. Many didn't take Further Maths themselves at A-Level. Others don't have a mathematics degree, so they've never studied the content beyond school level.

I'm not one of those tutors.

I took A-Level Further Maths and scored 90% (A*). I then did a Master's in Mathematics at Bristol, where I studied the kind of abstract algebra, analysis, and applied mathematics that underpins the Further Maths syllabus. I've been teaching it for over a decade — every board, every option module, every question type.

If your child is taking Further Maths, I can teach it.

Why Further Maths is different

The jump from A-Level to Further Maths.

Further Maths is a significant step up. The content is harder, the pace is faster, and school teaching often can't cover everything in enough depth — particularly for optional modules where class sizes are small or the school doesn't offer full support.

I cover all examined content across all boards, including Further Pure, Further Statistics, Further Mechanics, and Decision Maths. I also advise on module choices to help maximise grades.

University preparation

MAT, STEP, and admissions tests.

Many of my Further Maths students are also preparing for competitive university applications — Oxford, Cambridge, Imperial, Warwick. I can integrate preparation for MAT, STEP, and other admissions tests into our sessions.

One of my students scored 99/100 in their Further Maths exam while simultaneously preparing for university admissions. A structured approach makes both possible.

Topics covered

Further Maths modules.

Compulsory — all boards

Core Pure

Complex numbers, matrices, polar coordinates, hyperbolic functions, differential equations, further calculus, proof by induction.

Optional

Further Pure Mathematics

Groups, number theory, further vectors, surfaces of revolution, Maclaurin and Taylor series, methods in calculus. Available as an option on Edexcel and OCR.

Optional

Further Statistics

Poisson, geometric and negative binomial distributions, chi-squared tests, continuous distributions, estimation, confidence intervals.

Optional

Further Mechanics

Momentum and impulse, elastic collisions, circular motion, centres of mass, work-energy, Hooke's law, simple harmonic motion.

Optional

Decision Maths

Algorithms, graph theory, networks, linear programming, critical path analysis, the simplex method. Known as Discrete Mathematics on AQA and OCR.

Admissions Tests

MAT & STEP Preparation

Problem-solving beyond the syllabus. Extended proofs, multi-step problems, and the creative mathematical thinking required for competitive admissions.

FAQ

Further Maths — common questions.

Yes. I cover all examined Further Maths content across all boards, including optional modules such as Further Pure, Further Statistics, Further Mechanics, and Decision Maths.
Absolutely. Many of my Further Maths students are also preparing for university admissions tests like MAT or STEP. I can integrate preparation for these into our sessions alongside the A-Level work.
This is very common. Many schools have small Further Maths cohorts and limited specialist teaching, especially for optional modules. I cover the full syllabus and can act as the primary source of teaching if needed.
