Starting Year 13: the plan that protects your final grade

The most important fact about Year 13 maths is that it's built directly on top of Year 12 — not alongside it, on top of it. Chain rule becomes integration by substitution; radians become the language of everything; binomial expansion returns wearing a harder hat. Which means gaps from Year 12 don't sit quietly in the past waiting for revision season. They compound, weekly, from September. The students who protect their final grade are the ones who audit those gaps in the first fortnight of term — and this article is the plan for doing exactly that.
Why Year 13 punishes Year 12 gaps
In Year 12, a weak topic cost you marks on that topic. In Year 13, it costs you access to new content. A student shaky on differentiation doesn't just lose the differentiation marks any more — they can't properly learn integration by parts, parametric differentiation or differential equations, because every one of those lessons assumes the Year 12 skill is automatic. The workload feeling of Year 13 — "everything is suddenly so much harder" — is often not the new content at all. It's old debt being called in with interest. The good news buried in that: repairing one Year 12 topic frequently unlocks three Year 13 ones. The leverage runs in your favour if you find the debt early.
The September audit
Before October, the student should spend one honest session finding out where they actually stand — not by feeling, by paper. Take a Year 12 assessment or a set of exam questions spanning the year: algebra and functions, coordinate geometry, trigonometry, exponentials and logs, differentiation, integration, plus the applied strands. Sit it timed, mark it against the scheme, and sort the damage into the three piles that matter: solid, rusty, and never-really-had-it. Rusty topics need a drill each — an hour, some questions, done. Never-really-had-it topics need proper reteaching, and they need it now, in September, while the Year 13 content that depends on them is still weeks away. Most students who do this find the list is mercifully short: two or three genuine gaps, not the vague everything-feels-shaky dread they were carrying. Naming the gaps shrinks them.
UCAS moves your real deadlines forward
Year 13 has a calendar quirk nobody warns students about: your predicted grades are effectively decided in the autumn, when teachers write references and predictions for UCAS — and for the earliest deadlines that happens within weeks of term starting. The evidence a teacher has in front of them is Year 12 results plus the first weeks of Year 13. Which means the September audit isn't just good practice; it's commercially urgent. A strong October test can nudge a prediction up; a weak one can lock in a cautious prediction that follows the application everywhere it goes. If a course you want needs a grade above your current prediction, the conversation with your teacher should happen early in the autumn — with evidence, politely, and backed by visible work. Teachers move predictions for trajectories, not for promises.
The weekly structure that survives term
Grand revision plans die on contact with a normal school week, so the structure has to be modest enough to survive one. Mine is three commitments. First, the homework, done properly — attempted without the notes open, marked line by line, errors understood rather than transcribed. Second, one hour a week of past-topic maintenance: a short set of questions on something from Year 12 or last month, chosen by weakness, because retrieval is what stops the course silently unravelling behind you. Third, from the winter onwards, past-paper work on a rising curve — questions by topic first, sections under time later, full papers in the spring. That's it. Roughly five focused hours outside class in the autumn, growing later. Students who do those three things arrive at exam season revising. Students who don't arrive relearning — and the final grade is usually decided by which of those two verbs applies.
The applied paper is where plans go quiet
One specific warning from years of marking this course: pure maths gets the attention, and the statistics and mechanics content quietly starves. It's a third of the qualification, it's examined mercilessly, and its Year 12 foundations — the language of forces, the discipline of defining variables, hypothesis-test logic — decay faster than pure skills because they're practised less. Put applied questions into the weekly maintenance hour on equal terms. Every summer there are students whose pure work is A-grade and whose final grade isn't, and the applied paper is almost always where the difference lived.
The honest September question
Finally, the question worth asking while the year is young: is the current trajectory, honestly extrapolated, pointing at the grade the plan requires? Year 12 results are the best single predictor you have. A student who scraped a C-shaped Year 12 and needs an A has a real but closable gap — closable specifically in the autumn, when there's still time for structural repair rather than triage. The families who act on that question in September get a full year of compounding in the right direction. The ones who wait for the mocks to make it official spend the spring buying back time at a much worse exchange rate.
