If it's October and your child is already struggling in Year 12 maths, here are the two facts that matter most: this is one of the most common situations in the subject — not a sign of some rare unsuitability — and caught now, it's almost always recoverable, often completely. The October panic has a well-understood anatomy, a standard misdiagnosis, and a repair that works. I see this exact situation every autumn, so let me walk you through it the way I would across a first phone call.

Why October is when it shows

The timing isn't random. September's content wears familiar clothes — indices, quadratics, coordinate geometry — so a student can be quietly underwater for weeks while everything still looks like GCSE from the outside. By October, three things converge: the content turns genuinely new, the first test lands, and homework starts chaining skills together so that one weak link breaks whole questions. The struggle didn't start in October; October is just when the invoice arrived. That matters because it points at the real problem, which usually isn't the new topic at all.

The standard misdiagnosis

The family's theory is nearly always "she doesn't get differentiation" or whatever topic is currently on fire — and the school's response, extra help with differentiation, follows the same logic. But when I actually sit down with these students, the presenting topic is rarely the disease. The differentiation is failing because the algebra underneath it runs at half speed: expanding, factorising, indices, rearranging — the GCSE toolkit that A-Level assumes is automatic and which, for this student, never quite became automatic. It's the pattern I bang on about in the summer-preparation article, arriving on schedule for the students who missed it. The tell is that sensation parents hear about nightly: "I understand it in class, I just can't do it at home." Understanding was never the problem. Speed is the problem, and speed is trainable.

Diagnosis before treatment, always

So the first move is not more lessons on the current topic — it's an honest audit of where the actual gaps are. That means watching the student work through a spread of questions, GCSE algebra included, and sorting what breaks into the real categories: skills that are absent, skills that are present but slow, and knowledge that's fine but disorganised under pressure. This takes one session, and it changes everything downstream, because the three categories have completely different fixes and wildly different costs. Families who skip diagnosis buy months of well-meaning tutoring aimed at the wrong target. Families who start with it are usually startled by how narrow the real problem is — two or three load-bearing gaps, not a general unsuitability for the subject. Narrow problems are cheap to fix. Vague ones are expensive forever.

What recovery actually looks like, week by week

Honestly: the first fortnight is repair, not rescue — targeted drilling on the specific fluency gaps, running alongside schoolwork rather than instead of it, and it feels unglamorous because it's rebuilding foundations rather than fighting the current fire. Weeks three to five are where the compounding flips: as the algebra speeds up, the current topics abruptly get easier, homework time falls, and — this is the part parents report first — the mood around the subject changes. By the second half of term, a typical October-start student is level with the class and the conversation shifts from recovery to ambition. The trajectory isn't magic; it's what happens when effort finally lands on the actual problem. What makes it possible is the calendar: in October the gap is weeks wide. The same repair in March, with the same student, is a triage operation with exam dates breathing on it. Early is cheap. That's the whole argument.

When the problem isn't the maths

A minority of October struggles have a different root, and an honest triage names them rather than teaching over the top of them. Sometimes the workload across four A-Levels is the real crisis, and maths is just where it shows first. Sometimes attendance or sleep has quietly collapsed. And occasionally — rarely, but it happens — the subject choice itself deserves revisiting: a student with no need of maths for any plan they hold, no interest in it, and a miserable start might be better served by an honest change than by a heroic recovery. I've talked families out of tutoring and into those conversations more than once. But be slow to reach for this one: most October misery is fluency wearing a mask, and it lifts remarkably fast once the mask comes off.

What to do this week

Three steps. Talk to the class teacher and ask two precise questions: where exactly are the marks going, and is the effort visible? Get a real diagnosis — through school or someone like me — before buying any solution.
