Half-term catch-up: fixing a bad first half-term

A half-term can genuinely repair a bad first half-term of A-Level Maths — but not the way most students attempt it, which is a vague commitment to "do revision" that produces two days of note-reading and five of guilt. What works is narrower and easier: five working days, one diagnostic day and four targeted ones, aimed at the two or three specific gaps that caused the bad half-term in the first place. Here is that plan, day by day, exactly as I'd set it for one of my own students.
Before day one: shrink the target
The reason half-term plans fail is that they're aimed at everything. "Catch up in maths" is not a task; it's a mood. So the first move is to shrink the target to something a week can actually hit: not the whole course, but the specific topics where marks actually died this half-term. Gather the evidence first — the marked homework, the first test, anything with a score on it — and write down where the losses cluster. Most students who do this find the same thing: the damage isn't everywhere, it's concentrated in two or three places, usually with weak algebra underneath at least one of them. Those two or three places are the entire mission. Everything else is explicitly off the list, and crossing things off the list is half the psychological value of the exercise.
Day one: the diagnostic
One honest session, sixty to ninety minutes, no notes, timer on. Work through a spread of questions covering the suspect topics — textbook review exercises or past-paper questions by topic — and mark it properly against solutions. The goal isn't a score; it's a sorted list. Every error goes into one of three piles: never understood it (needs re-teaching from the ground), understood but slow (needs drilling for speed), or knew it, slipped (needs habits, not study). This changes the shape of the week completely, because the piles get entirely different treatment — and because the exercise nearly always shrinks the problem. The student who sat down believing they were "behind in maths" stands up knowing they have one re-teach and two drills to do. That's a week's work, comfortably.
Days two to four: one gap per day, closed properly
Each day gets one topic and the same three-part structure. First, rebuild: work through the ideas from a good explanation — textbook chapter, school notes, a video if it helps — but with a pen moving, reproducing each example cold after reading it, never just watching. Second, drill: a solid block of questions climbing in difficulty, marked line by line as you go, because an unmarked question teaches nothing and an error found late has already practised itself. Third — and this is the step students skip — finish on exam questions for that topic, under a loose timer. The topic isn't closed when the exercises come out; it's closed when board-style questions on it come out at something like real speed. Two to three focused hours a day does this comfortably. Six distracted ones don't, which is why the afternoon is officially free: the plan runs on intensity, not martyrdom.
Day five: put it back together
The final session is mixed and timed: a section of a real paper, or a compiled set spanning the week's topics plus older ones, under exam-ish conditions. This is the step that converts three separately-repaired topics back into one working subject — because the skill the classroom actually demands in November isn't performing a topic in isolation, it's recognising which tool a question wants when nobody tells you. Mark it, tally it against day one, and let the student see the difference in numbers. Nearly always the movement is visible in five days, and visible movement does something no pep talk manages: it converts "I'm bad at maths" into "I was behind on two things, and now I'm not." That sentence, carried back into the classroom, changes the second half-term more than the maths itself does.
Where parents actually help
Not at the whiteboard — at the perimeter. The useful contributions are logistics and protection: a quiet desk, the papers printed before Monday, the mornings genuinely ring-fenced against plans, and the afternoons genuinely free so the deal stays credible. Resist the two classic interventions: hovering (which converts maths anxiety into performance anxiety) and the scope-creep suggestion that a good morning should become a whole day (which converts a working plan into a resented one). If the week reveals that a gap won't close — the re-teach pile keeps refusing to move — that's not failure, that's the diagnostic doing its job: it's found something that needs actual teaching, and a short block of targeted help aimed at precisely that gap is now a small, well-defined purchase instead of a vague expensive one.
The honest limits
One week fixes a bad half-term. It doesn't fix a bad year, a fluency hole the size of GCSE, or a student who won't sit down — those are different problems with different articles. And the repair only holds if the habits that caused the gaps change with it: the daily twenty minutes, the marked homework, the asking early. But for the most common October situation — a capable student knocked over by pace, carrying two or three specific wounds — five structured days is genuinely enough. I've watched it reset entire years.
