Maths or Further Maths? What degree courses actually require

Very few degree courses formally require Further Maths. Mathematics at the most competitive universities is the main exception; nearly everything else ranges from "strongly appreciated" down to "makes no difference at all". That gap — between required and merely admired — is where families make expensive mistakes, because a fourth A-Level that isn't needed can cost grades in the three that are. I've written a general guide to whether Further Maths is worth it; this is the companion piece, subject by subject. One caveat before the map: entry requirements are set course by course and they change, so treat this as the pattern and always check the current page for the specific course.

Mathematics degrees

This is the one place Further Maths approaches being non-negotiable. The strongest maths departments in the country either require it outright where a school offers it, or state a preference firm enough that its absence needs explaining in the application. Below the very top tier, plenty of good maths degrees ask only for A-Level Maths — but here's the thing I tell students bluntly: if Further Maths feels like too much, a top maths degree will feel like considerably more. The course content is the honest entrance exam. A student targeting mathematics at a competitive university should be taking Further Maths not to satisfy an admissions filter but because it's the first year of the subject they claim to want.

Engineering

Rarely a formal requirement, consistently an advantage, and — more practically — the best insurance policy available. Matrices, complex numbers and differential equations are the working language of the first year of every engineering degree, and they live in Further Maths, not single maths. Students who arrive without them cope; universities teach the material fresh. But the students I've watched go through it describe the same first term: those with Further Maths consolidate while everyone else scrambles. If an engineering-bound student can take it without endangering Maths and Physics grades, it's the best value fourth subject there is. If it would endanger them, drop it without guilt — the offer is written on the other three.

Physics

Much the same shape as engineering, slightly stronger. The most mathematical physics courses lean noticeably towards applicants with Further Maths, and the content overlap is real — the maths of a physics degree arrives early and hits hard. Same rule: valuable if it's affordable in workload terms, poisonous if it drags the Physics grade down. No physics department will trade an A in Physics for a B alongside Further Maths.

Computer science

The requirement is almost always A-Level Maths, full stop — Further Maths is seldom demanded even at the top. But computer science has quietly become one of the most competitive courses in the country, and when every applicant has the A* in Maths, Further Maths is one of the few remaining ways a mathematical application stands out. The discrete and decision content in some Further Maths options is also the closest thing A-Level offers to the actual mathematics of computing. Useful, never essential.

Economics

Economics degrees want Maths, often at a high grade, and the most quantitative courses appreciate Further Maths without requiring it. The honest advice differs by student: for someone targeting the most mathematical economics courses, Further Maths signals exactly the right thing. For everyone else, three strong grades — with an emphatic grade in Maths — do the job completely. I've never seen an economics offer lost for lack of Further Maths. I have seen one lost to a Chemistry grade that slipped while a student carried four subjects.

Medicine, law, and everything else

For medicine, Further Maths is close to irrelevant — offers are built on Chemistry, Biology and grades, and admissions tutors would visibly prefer a higher grade in a third science to the existence of a fourth subject. Law, psychology, business, languages, humanities: the same, only more so. If your child is heading anywhere in this paragraph and taking Further Maths anyway, it should be for one reason only — because they love it and it costs the other subjects nothing. That's a perfectly good reason, incidentally. It's the only one that survives contact with the workload.

How to use this map

Work backwards from the shortlist, not forwards from the subject. Pull up the entry requirements for the five or six courses actually in contention and read what they say — required, preferred, or silent. Required: take it, and organise the timetable around doing it justice. Preferred, or the course is fiercely competitive and mathematical: take it if — and only if — single maths is comfortable and the other grades are safe. Silent: let the decision be about the student, not the application, because the application genuinely doesn't care. The fourth A-Level exists to serve the three that carry the offer. The moment that reverses, something has gone wrong.

One postscript for families whose school doesn't offer Further Maths at all: universities read applications in context, and the absence of a subject your school never taught is not held against you — though the strongest maths departments will expect the appetite demonstrated some other way.
