Choosing A-Levels: who should (and shouldn't) pick maths

A-Level Maths opens more degree doors than any other single subject — and it is also the A-Level most often taken by the wrong people for the wrong reasons, which is why it produces so many miserable Year 12s. Both halves of that sentence are true, and the whole job of choosing well is holding them together. As someone who spends every working week with students on the right and wrong sides of this decision, here's the honest selection test — what maths unlocks, what it actually demands, and the specific people who shouldn't pick it however good it looks on the list.
What it unlocks — the genuine case
The practical argument is real and worth stating without hedging: maths is required or expected for engineering, physics, computer science, economics and mathematics itself, welcomed by medicine and the sciences, and quietly respected by everything else. If a sixteen-year-old genuinely doesn't know where they're heading — which is most sixteen-year-olds, and is fine — maths keeps more doors open per hour of effort than anything else on the options form. Universities read it as evidence of rigour regardless of the destination course. That's the honest case for it, and for the right student it's decisive. Note, though, what the case is: it's an argument about doors. It says nothing about whether the two years behind those doors will be bearable — and that's the half of the decision most families skip.
What it demands — the part the prospectus omits
Three demands, stated plainly. It's cumulative like nothing else on the options form: in history a bad half-term is a bad half-term, but in maths October's gap is still failing questions in March, because everything builds on everything. It demands daily practice rather than deadline heroics — the students who thrive do something most days, and the essay-crisis approach that works elsewhere reliably fails here. And it assumes fluent GCSE algebra as its working language from the first lesson: not a grade, a fluency — I've written about exactly what that means over the summer, and it's the strongest predictor of a happy Year 12 that I know of. None of this makes maths uniquely hard. It makes it uniquely unforgiving of a specific working style — drift, cram, recover — that plenty of otherwise excellent students run on.
The selection test I actually use
Grades matter, but they're the coarse filter. A comfortable 7 or above at GCSE says the raw material is there; a 6 is a genuine maybe that deserves its own honest look. The finer filter is two questions. First: when a hard maths problem finally gives way, is there a small real pleasure in it? That click is the fuel of the whole course — students who feel it can cross very difficult ground, and students who feel only relief tend to run dry by November of Year 12, whatever their grade was. Second: will you genuinely do maths most days, including days you don't feel like it? Answer with evidence from Years 10 and 11, not with intentions. Two yeses: take it with confidence. One yes: takable, eyes open, with the missing half named and planned for. Two noes: the grade will not save you, and it's kinder to say so now than in January.
Who shouldn't take it
Four recognisable people, described without judgement. The status chooser, taking maths because it's "the respected one" while feeling nothing for the subject — status is the first fuel to burn off, and it burns by half-term. The parental proxy, carrying someone else's unfinished ambition; this one ends in either quiet misery or a January drop, and I meet both versions every year. The false-necessity case, who believes their course requires maths when it doesn't — worth twenty minutes on actual entry requirements before signing anything, because psychology, law, medicine and much of business are routinely misfiled here. And the capable-but-mismatched student: good grade, real ability, but a working style built entirely on burst-and-deadline — who can absolutely succeed, but only if they know they're signing up to retrain how they work, not just what they study. For all four, the alternative isn't failure; it's choosing subjects where their actual fuel supply works.
The myths, briefly
"You need to be a natural." The natural exists, but most top grades I've seen were built by ordinary, consistent students with fluent algebra and good habits — consistency beats brilliance over two years, reliably. "It's the hardest A-Level." It's the least forgiving, which is different: the hours are comparable to the sciences, but they must be paid weekly rather than in arrears. "AI and calculators make it pointless." The qualification has never really been about computing answers; it certifies that you can reason precisely through multi-step problems under pressure — which is exactly the skill the doors are being opened for. And one myth in the other direction: "if you find it hard at GCSE you'll hate A-Level." Some of my happiest students found GCSE dull and woke up when the subject finally got interesting. Difficulty and misery are not the same variable.
The bottom line
Take A-Level Maths if the doors matter to a plan you actually hold, or the click is real — ideally both — and you can honestly commit to little-and-often work on a sound GCSE foundation. Don't take it for status, for someone else, or for a requirement that doesn't exist. And if this reads as gatekeeping, it's the opposite: the subject rewards the right students enormously, and the whole point of choosing honestly is to make sure you arrive as one of them — or spend the same two years thriving somewhere better suited. Both outcomes count as getting the decision right.
