How to actually use past papers.

Past papers are the most powerful revision tool you have — but most students just "do" them and tick the answers. That barely moves the needle. This is the sequence I take every student through.

Topic first, then whole papers

Early on, don't sit full papers — pull questions by topic across many years until each topic is solid. Whole papers come once the foundations hold.

Then sit complete papers under timing

Once topics are secure, sit full papers to the clock, no notes. This builds the stamina and pacing that decide grades on the day.

Mark ruthlessly with the official mark scheme

Mark your own work against the real mark scheme. Learn where the method (M) marks sit and how examiners award them — present working so you bank marks even when an answer slips.

Redo everything you dropped

A few days later, redo every question you lost marks on — from scratch, not just reading the solution. The redo is where the grade actually moves.

The exam at a glance

What's in each OCR (A) paper.

Paper 1 · Pure Mathematics

Pure maths only (H240/01): proof, algebra, functions, trigonometry, calculus, sequences, vectors and numerical methods. Two hours, 100 marks.

Paper 2 · Pure & Statistics

Pure mathematics and statistics (H240/02): the pure content again, plus probability, distributions, hypothesis testing and the large data set.

Paper 3 · Pure & Mechanics

Pure mathematics and mechanics (H240/03): the pure content plus kinematics, forces, Newton's laws, moments and projectiles.
